WHAT TO DO IN CANTABRIA WHEN IT’S RAINY?
CHARMING PLANS FOR RAINY DAYS AND BAD WEATHER
The green of the nature that surrounds us and that is, without a doubt, one of the hallmarks of Cantabria and the north of Spain has its logical explanation in the rainy weather that can surprise you one morning.
In autumn and winter in Cantabria, it will not be unusual to find rainy days or a few hours of rain. But this does not have to limit you from visiting incredible places. Therefore, we are going to recommend several “indoor” plans for when this happens.
NATURAL AREAS WITH A UNIQUE CHARM AT THIS TIME
In Cantabria we are lucky to have caves that preserve thousands of years of history inside. Visitable caves that will take you on a journey through the history of humanity in a fascinating way. Here are the most important ones.
ALTAMIRA CAVES
(5 minutes from the hotel)
Just 5 minutes from the hotel, you can visit this wonder considered a world icon for representing the first discovery of art by humanity.
The originals are closed to the public for conservation reasons, but you can visit an exact replica to admire first-hand the cave paintings of this place, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
SOPLAO CAVES
(45 minutes from the hotel)
This cave of great geological value is located 45 minutes from our hotel. Discovered by miners at the beginning of the 20th century, it has 20 km of galleries, although only 4 are open to the public.
The visit lasts one hour and is done partly on a mining train and partly on foot along the perfectly adapted walkways of the cave.
MONTE CASTILLO CAVES
(23 minutes from the hotel)
In the pretty town of Puente Viesgo, these caves, although less known than the two previous ones, house four cavities with Palaeolithic cave art and have been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Two of these four cavities can be visited, El Castillo and Las Monedas. Cave paintings from thousands of years ago with representations of animals that lived with man at that time.
MUSEUMS IN CANTABRIA
Autumn-winter in Cantabria is also ideal for visiting museums. There are several throughout the community, but perhaps the most notable are in the capital, Santander. Although, right next door, in Santillana del Mar, you also have some such as the Altamira Caves or the Torture Museum. Below, we mention the most important ones in Santander
CENTRO BOTÍN
Designed by architect Renzo Piano and recently built, this building located on the sea stands out mainly for its modern architecture and its location.
You can walk around inside, both to enjoy its architecture and to visit the interesting temporary exhibitions it houses.
CANTABRICAN MARITIME MUSEUM
An ideal place to learn about Cantabria’s seafaring tradition.
Here you will also visit several aquariums with marine species, as well as learn about the history and technology of the Cantabrian Sea, thus entering into the fascinating world of the seas and oceans.
AIR-RAID SHELTER
An interesting place that has recently opened, located under the Plaza de Mariana Pineda, built in 1937 to provide shelter from the air raids during the Civil War.
Here you can relive, through a simulation, what the bombings were like at that time.
